The tree snapped in half some time ago, but in successive years is a fertile host for giant beefsteak fungus(?).

Eye-catching fungi forms that cantilever off the tree!

Trees are constantly giving, serving as homes for animals and insects, and supporting other forms of vegetation. Basically, like that friend at the pub who’s always buying a round for everyone!

I've always known them as bracket fungi but beefsteak fungi is a bracket fungi. When a tree is dead, you will normally find them growing. I've seen some which were about a foot wide.
