@Ian Bramham: I've yet to pack light enough to be able to carry a tripod...but still intend to buy one, one day, to force the issue. I've only ever missed a tripod once and that was missing the chance to do the Colliseum justice in Rome.
For some reason (and not checking or understanding the set up was a big mistake) I've been defaulting to ISO 800 and a lot of day shots have been noisy, requiring work to fix.
On the other hand, following Ken Rockwell's tip - I have set it to auto ISO, so it does all the thinking and calculating. Together with 6400, and a VR lens I pulled it off. This time it worked...so if very lucky without a tripod, I was at least very pleased!
