Road Champs (8)

David Millar of Garmin Sharp had bowed out of the Time Trial on the Thursday night with a chest infection and trying to show some form took part in the road race on the Sunday, but again illness saw him finish early.

This illness in turn robbed him of his Tour de France place much to his annoyance with management, who he felt should've had more confidence in him and his track record. They took the view that a three week Grand Tour was too risky for him in his condition. His argument leaned towards the sentimental, theirs to the rational. In his final year before retirement, during which a film is being made of his year, this was a blow in more ways than one that I'm sure the wide screen will explore in some detail.

Millar is a reformed doper who proves the value of rehabilitation and redemption. He is charismatic, uber-cool and a superb writer and voice of cycling but because of his past, divides opinion.

I for one will be sad to see him go and was pleased to add him to my photographic palmares.
